Accolades & Experience

Dr. Morgan P. Lorio is a board-certified orthopedic spine & hand surgeon with over 20 years of surgical experience. Dr. Lorio completed his undergraduate education at Lousiana State University – Baton Rouge, where he received a B.S. in Biochemistry. Dedicated to undertaking a career in orthopedics, Dr. Lorio earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University – Shreveport’s medical school.

After fulfilling his didactic requirements, Dr. Lorio performed a two-year course of additional study in General Surgery at SUNY-Buffalo’s School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. This was followed by a longer 4-year residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the institution. In recognition of his surgical mastery, Dr. Lorio was honored with the title of Chief Resident of Orthopedic Surgery in 1993.

Subsequently, Dr. Lorio completed 4 fellowships in orthopedic specialties, ranging from hand and microsurgery to minimally invasive interbody fusion and MRI interpretation. However, his longest fellowship–The Simmons Spine Fellowship–solidified his desire to practice spine surgery.

As such, Dr. Lorio sought and successfully obtained board certifications in orthopedic surgery (1999), spine surgery (2000), and hand surgery (2001). He resumed private practice at The Hand & Spine Center of Bristol, TN, where he worked for over 15 years. Before joining Orthopedic & Laser Spine Surgery, Dr. Lorio briefly practiced medicine at Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics in Nashville, TN.

An integral component of the OLSS team, Dr. Lorio brings a lot to the table. A deft researcher, Dr. Lorio provides peer reviewing expertise for the International Journal of Spine Surgery. In fact, his own personal research studies have been published in more than 35 journals, including The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and The Journal of Neurosurgery. This commitment to research manifests itself in his practice as a dedication to integrating the most advanced and up-to-date surgical techniques into his treatment plans.

In honor of his compassion and drive, Dr. Lorio has received numerous honors, including Becker’s 26 Spine Surgeons Involved in Humanitarian Efforts, The ISASS Distinguished Service Award, and Wellmont Health System’s Healthcare Hero Award.
