Courageous Journey: Local Woman Strives for Healing After Spinal Injury

Diane Lundmark, aged 59 from Minnetonka, is navigating an arduous journey following a severe spinal injury sustained in September while visiting her son in Montana. During a visit to the bathroom, she collapsed, hitting her head on a countertop, which resulted in significant damage to her spine. Kirk Lundmark, her husband, noted that the C5 vertebra dislocated and hyper-extended over C6, impacting the spinal nerve and leading to Diane’s paralysis from the chest down.

Prior to her injury, Diane was an active bicyclist and a former volunteer ski instructor with the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Allina Health. Now, she finds herself as a patient at the Courage Kenny Clinic, located within Abbott Northwestern Hospital. She is actively engaged in physical and occupational therapy for five hours each day, along with speech therapy aimed at enhancing her vocal projection and diaphragm function.

Her recovery program includes the use of an electrical machine designed to stimulate her muscles and nervous system. Dr. James Spendley, a spinal cord injury rehabilitation specialist at the Courage Kenny Institute, stated that Diane is making significant progress despite facing typical recovery challenges. He emphasized the importance of the rehabilitation process and shared that Diane’s determination sets a positive example for others.

Diane currently has no feeling below the chest but has started to regain movement in her arms and can experience muscle sensations during various stretching exercises, especially in her abdominal area. Kirk shared his unwavering support for Diane’s journey, emphasizing their commitment to her recovery. Diane acknowledges the uncertainties surrounding her healing trajectory, but she is resolute in her goal to advocate for others living with spinal cord injuries.

As she continues her rehabilitation, Diane expresses a sense of optimism about regaining strength and independence. “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she mentioned, highlighting her desire to continue improving and becoming more self-sufficient. Despite the daunting road ahead, Diane remains motivated, supported by her family and medical team.

The process of recovery from a spinal injury presents numerous challenges, but Diane’s experience illustrates significant resilience and determination. Her story underscores the importance of patience and humility in facing life’s unexpected changes. She is determined to make the most of her situation while being a source of inspiration and support for others in similar circumstances.
